Elton B. Smith, 90, of Hanson, died April 14, 2008 at his daughter’s home in Keene, N. H. after a period of failing health.

Elton B. Smith, 90, of Hanson, died April 14, 2008 at his daughter’s home in Keene, N. H. after a period of failing health.

He was born in Brooklyn, N. Y., March 3, 1918, the son of Milton and Elsa (Goldschmidt) Smith. Mr. Smith grew up in New York, moving to N. H. to attend the University of N. H. He graduated with a B.A. in economics and went on to receive Master’s Degree in Education from Boston University.{sidebar id=1}

     Mr. Smith lived in N. H. until 1961, at which time he and his family moved to Hanson.

     Mr. Smith’s career was in secondary education as a teacher and administrator. He was vice principal of Winnacunnet High School in Hampton, N. H., principal of Whitman-Hanson High School and principal of Duxbury High School. Mr. Smith then joined the Mass. Dept. of Education where he worked in the School Building Assistance program, retiring in 1985.

He served in the U. S. Navy. He was stationed in the South Pacific during WW II on the island of Guam and retired from the Naval Reserves after 20 years.

Mr. Smith was married for 65 years to his wife Harriet (Hilton) Smith. In addition to his wife, he leaves his two daughters, Roxanne Karter and her husband Karl of Keene, N. H. and Kathleen Hockenberry and her husband Mickey of Halifax and three grandsons, Elias Karter of Keene, Joshua Hockenberry of Quincy and Nathaniel Hockenberry of Halifax.

There are no public calling hours. A memorial service will be held at a later date at the Newmarket Community Church and graveside at the family cemetery in Newmarket, N. H. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to a favorite charity in Mr. Smith’s name.{sidebar id=6}
