Grace Stroh Poellmitz, 83, of Duxbury died on Tues., March 25 after a
short residence at St. Patrick’s Manor in Framingham. Mrs. Poellmitz
was born in New York City, the only child of George Walter Stroh of
Brooklyn, New York and Anna Seitz Stroh of Mannheim-Waldhof, Germany.
Grace Stroh Poellmitz, 83, of Duxbury died on Tues., March 25 after a short residence at St. Patrick’s Manor in Framingham. Mrs. Poellmitz was born in New York City, the only child of George Walter Stroh of Brooklyn, New York and Anna Seitz Stroh of Mannheim-Waldhof, Germany. She was the wife of the late William Albert Poellmitz, who died in 2007, to whom she was married for 61 years. Mrs. Poellmitz was raised in New Rochelle, New York, sharing a house with her aunt, Rose Seitz Schulz, and her cousins, Dorothy and Rosemary Schulz. After graduating as valedictorian from Isaac E. Young High School in New Rochelle in 1942, she attended Barnard College and the College of New Rochelle. Mrs. Poellmitz then worked as a chemical technician for American Cyanamid in Stamford, Conn., where she participated in the Manhattan Project, and later for General Electric in Schenectady, N.Y.{sidebar id=1} In 1956 Mrs. Poellmitz and her family moved to Huntington, N.Y., and in 1957 settled in Franklin where she and her husband remained until 1979. After raising three children, she returned to college and was awarded a Bachelor of Science in mathematics from Framingham State College in 1973. Mrs. Poellmitz was employed as a mathematics teacher at Franklin High School from 1975 to 1979. After moving to Duxbury in 1979, she taught mathematics and computer science for the Department of Youth Services in Plymouth, from which she retired in 1994. After retirement, Mrs. Poellmitz served as a volunteer chaplain at Plymouth Hospital. She was a community member of the Duxbury High School Council, and a member of the Pilgrim Church in Duxbury. Mrs. Poellmitz leaves her son William C. Poellmitz and wife Karen A. of Southborough; her daughter Susan P. McNary of Marshfield; grandchildren Karl J. and Emma K. Poellmitz of Southborough, and Benjamin A. McNary of Marshfield; and her cousins Dorothy Schulz Coffman and husband Clyde of Sterling, Va., and Rosemary Schulz Greene of Alpharetta, Ga. She was also the mother of the late Kathryn A. Cook. A memorial service will be held on Sun., April 6 at 2 p.m. at the Pilgrim Church in Duxbury. Her ashes will be interred alongside her husband at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne.
