Last Friday was a special night for State Representative Daniel Webster. In addition to announcing his intentions to run for a second term on Beacon Hill, the South Shore politician also celebrated his 40th birthday.
Friends, supporters and fellow representatives gathered at Cataldi’s in Hanson to pay tribute to Webster on his special day as well as show their appreciation for a job well done during his first term and anticipation for another two years in the House.{sidebar id=1} “I think Dan has been a great representative and a great supporter of many bills,” said Plymouth County District Attorney Timothy Cruz. “He is committed to criminal justice, public safety and someone I think of as a friend and ally to not only me, but district attorneys throughout the Commonwealth.” Cruz did admit, however, that he wasn’t aware that Webster was celebrating the big 4-0, but knew what he’d like to give as a gift. “What else do you get for the man that has everything but votes,” said Cruz. Friday’s events brought out many supporters from Duxbury, including the heads of the Republican Town Committee. “Dan has done a very effective job, from his voting record [of 100%] to working tirelessly, it is refreshing to see that in politics,” said Mark Johnston. “That kind of commitment bodes well for all of us.” Johnston’s fellow co-chair, John Taft echoed his sentiments. “He has supported Governor [Mitt] Romney and both are trying hard to improve conditions for all of us in Massachusetts,” he said. “He is intelligent, thoughtful and well experienced to represent us.” After some good natured roasting from local politicians and friends, Webster took to the microphone himself and thanked everyone for coming out for both his birthday and the launch of his re-election campaign. Webster made it official that he will seek a second term this November to represent Pembroke, Hanson and precincts in Duxbury and Halifax.{sidebar id=4} While no one has yet to step forward to oppose Webster for his seat, he said he expected someone to come out and challenge him in the near future. Reflecting on his two years in state politics, Webster said that while billions in deficit have been reduced, there is still work to go. He also pledged his support for Governor Romney and his reforms to improve the lives of all citizens. “It’s time to stop special interests from controlling what happens in government,” said Webster. “Let’s make the Commonwealth better for us and our children.” After a night filled with good-natured fun, largely at Webster’s expense, the state representative said he expected as much from his friends and supporters and was grateful they were behind him. “It’s great to have so many supporters,” he said. “I’m looking forward to the future and have thoroughly enjoyed my first two years [in the House]. There is a lot more to be done and I look forward to being there for the next couple of years to make it happen.”{sidebar id=6}
