Selectmen this week refused to open an emergency drill with the Federal

Committee, saying there was no room and no compelling reason to do so.
Selectmen this week refused to open an emergency drill with the Federal Emergency Management Agency to members of the Nuclear Advisory Committee, saying there was no room and no compelling reason to do so.
At the selectmen’s Monday night meeting, Nuclear Advisory Committee chairman Mary Lampert asked selectmen to let her and others observe the “FEMA tabletop emergency drill” that will be held in Duxbury this month. She said having committee members observe the drill would help the committee advise the town on its emergency planning. Selectmen chairman Andre Martecchini refused Lampert’s request. “You requested this last year and we didn’t allow it,” said Martecchini. “We’re not going to allow observers. It’s a training exercise to test a particular series of events. The people who are participating are going through the (emergency) implementing procedures.” Also, the room at the fire station where the drill is held is not large enough to accommodate spectators, he added. “The room is chock full,” said Selectman Betsy Sullivan. “I know the public is not served by this,” said Lampert. “It is more than a training exercise. It is a test of current procedures and there can be lessons learned.” In other business, selectmen: *Reviewed the town’s latest audit, which is in a new format this year. Auditor Renee Davis of Powers and Sullivan discussed the changes, which doubled the size of the town’s audit document from 25 pages to 50 pages. The major change is that this year all the town’s fixed assets, from its buildings, streets, water and sewer systems to its school books, were catalogued and valued. The audit is used by institutional investors and rating agencies, which set the town’s bond ratings. Duxbury’s current bond rating is one step below triple A. *Voted unanimously to accept a proclamation declaring that for the 14th year, Duxbury will be a “Tree City USA.” This designation is made by the National Arbor Day Foundation. Selectmen also announced that on April 30th there will be a ceremony marking Arbor Day at the Chandler School. *Voted unanimously for a one-day liquor license for “Dinners for Duxbury” to be held by the Duxbury Education Foundation, Inc. at the senior center on May 1. They also voted unanimously for a one-day liquor license for a “Sadie” fundraiser for a senior bus to be held on May 15 at the senior center.
