Dealership on hold

A plan to sell used cars, including Jeeps, from the former Millbrook Motors location on Tremont Street has been tabled by Duxbury selectmen until they obtain further information.

John Wisbach, formerly of Josselyn Avenue, has applied for a class 2 auto sales license. He appeared before the Board of Selectmen Monday night to explain his plan to sell used Jeeps and other vehicles, and also to service cars and have a Jeep restoration business at 1474 Tremont Street.

This is the location of Millbrook Motors, which closed in 2010, after selling Jeeps to Duxbury residents since 1954. It’s owned by Millbrook Enterprises Incorporated in care of Edwin E. Loring, who is listed with the town as the registered agent.

Wisbach said his business is named Millbrook Motor Cars, Inc. and that it would provide sales, service, rentals, repairs and leasing in the main show room area of the now vacant building.  The company has no relation to Millbrook Motors.

He also said there was a new lease for the property and that multiple companies planned to share the building, including a luxury car rental business and an HVAC/sheet metal fabricator.

Selectmen said they were unaware that there would be multiple businesses under one roof, and that they had not yet gotten input from the fire and police chiefs on these plans. They wanted more information before voting on Wisbach’s license and they continued the hearing.

In May 2010, Millbrook Motors stopped selling Jeeps but was still in the service business and at that time, the Lorings hoped they could begin selling cars again. But when the business closed its doors for the last time, the garage and office equipment were auctioned off in December 2010. Tedesco Auctions ran the auction.

In other business, selectmen:

·      Accepted a $5,000 donation to the Duxbury Animal Shelter from the Copeland Family Foundation to be used for medical and other needs of the animals in the shelter’s care. Selectmen praised Animal Control Officer Eddie Ramos for his work at the shelter and he, in turn, praised his volunteers: Susan Curtis, Jean Downey and Joccelyn Albertson. The Copeland Foundation has given the shelter similar grants in the past.

·      Announced that a team of town employees has helped save the town $34,600 in health insurance costs by organizing classes and seminars for fellow employees. Town Manager Richard MacDonald named Human Resources Director Jeannie Horne, Susan Kelley, Anne Murray and Barbara Mello, all of whom work in the selectmen/town manager’s office, as the forces behind the programs and the savings.

·      Announced the grand opening of the new crematory will take place Monday, July 9 at 6 p.m. Residents are asked to use the Tremont Street entrance to the Mayflower cemetery and park there.

·      Learned that the Interfaith Council raised and donated $11,615 to the Recreation Department to fund scholarships for children in need to attend various summer camps.
