| Gone fishin': Mackerel everywhere |

COASTAL REPORT: Schools of bait are the hot subject right now. Find the bait and you will most likely find a nice striper or tuna. Large schools of mackerel are everywhere off our coastline. There are also large schools of squid with tuna and stripers gorging on them. Water temperatures are running from the upper 50s to the mid-60 degree range. Most of the week we’ve had big time thunderstorms and northerly winds that have kept anglers on shore, but being in New England the weather can change on a dime and fishing will get red hot-just like the weather.
Over at Peaked Hill Bar, tuna fishing is slow but there is plenty of striper action. Best baits here are live mackerel or wire line jigging with dark colored jigs. Up at the Race at Provincetown getting here has been more difficult than catching stripers. Live bait or butterfly jigs and wire line jigging is your best bet here. Most of the schools of mackerel are in the spike or tinka size, mostly very small. At Duxbury and Plymouth Bays fishing is very good right now. There are lots of mackerel and harbor pollock for live lining. Most of the schools of mackerel are spike size. Best bet to get mackerel for live bait is early morning. Inside Duxbury Bay, striper fishing is good with lots of keeper-size fish. Clark’s Island has been giving up some keeper stripers, as has Brown’s Bank. All through Duxbury Bay you can find schools of schoolie stripers and small blue fish. Try casting plugs or metal lures to these schools of fish. At high water you can find stripers up inside Warren’s Cove and at the docks of Cordage Pier. Out in Cordage Channel watch for the birds diving on schools of fish and bait. There have been rumors of pogies inside Duxbury Bay. Striper fishing has been okay all the way up to the Powder Point Bridge. Along Brown’s Bank and up at the power plant you can find some keeper bass. Try live lining mackerel or pollock and slow trolling them on lead core line. Out at the Gurnet in Plymouth fishing around the Rock has been good with rumors of some large cow stripers in the 40-pound range. Over at High Pines Ledge fishing is off and on with some nice stripers coming on live mackerel on a falling tide. Fishing from the beach here is also very good. Chunk bait or live eels have been the hot baits here. Up at the Green Harbor area fishing from the jetties has been good on falling tides. Eels and chunked mackerel are your best baits to hook a striper. At the Red Can outside Green Harbor flounder fishing remains good -- clams and sea worms are the top baits. Farnham Rock remains good at early morning to find live bait. At Brant Rock off the beaches it’s almost impossible to fish with all the weeds that have been blown in from the offshore bad weather. Up at the mouth of the New Inlet (North and South Rivers) striper fishing remains good. Best bait is live mackerel or shad. Striper fishing is good up inside both the North and South Rivers. Most of the stripers are in the 28 to 34 inch range with an occasional 40-inch fish. Outside the mouth of the North River, near the entrance bell, flounder fishing has also been okay. The outlook for Fourth of July is for nice hot weather and fishing to be at its best. Usually this marks the beginning of the tuna bite, so expect large crowds of anglers! With all the holiday celebrations, the Coast Guard and the environmental police will be in full force, so make sure you practice safe boating. Please remember to take a kid fishing! |
