As part of our ongoing observation of the 150th anniversary of the Civil War, The Duxbury Rural and Historical Society offers a glimpse into the lives of Duxbury’s Union soldiers. David Meechan – May 9, 1862, West Point, Virginia We help to bury the dead. We are eating hard tack and salt junk, very much growling. Hot day. Packed up again and marched about two miles to the front towards Richmond. Very hot and could not have held out on a long march today. Nothing to eat yet but what we carry in our haversacks. Can’t eat much of that. Now is the tug of war. Letters from Laura, Mother Peterson, and Abby. For daily Civil War journal updates, please visit the Duxbury Rural and Historical Society’s Web site at duxburyhistory.org and under the blog heading, click on the individual in whom you’re interested. |
