| Clipper Visit with Kara Falcone |

Duxbuy High School graduate and Lehigh University freshman, Kara Falcone knows how to balance work and play. As campus correspondent for Lehigh’s branch of Her Campus, an online magazine geared toward college-age girls, Falcone has learned a lot about time management. When she’s not volunteering with her sorority, studying or having fun with friends, Kara is knee-deep in articles on fashion, spring break and fitness. She took some time out of her busy schedule to tell us more about herself and Her Campus. How did you get involved with Her Campus? At the beginning of the year, I noticed that Lehigh did not have a Her Campus branch. One of my good friends here at school had also mentioned Her Campus to me, so the two of us decided to start a branch together. There was an application process where we had to send in writing samples, resumes, etcetera and went back and forth with some of the national Her Campus reps. Eventually we got approval to start our branch. How were you introduced to Her Campus? I was on the Dragon Flyer in high school, and would look on Her Campus for article ideas. Once I knew what it was, I found myself checking it almost every day to see what kinds of things they posted. Now I’m addicted. How would you describe the Web site to someone who has never heard of it? Her Campus is an online magazine geared mostly toward college girls, but also high school girls. It is kind of a mix of all different types of magazines. There are articles on fashion, current events, shows, movies, books, music, fitness, boys -- basically anything you could think of. Individual universities can start their own branch and that section of the site has more specific articles geared towards the girls at that university. Did it help you in making the decision of where to go to college? I always knew Lehigh was my top choice, and we didn’t have a branch until this year, but I would definitely say that looking at Her Campus helped give me insight as to what the student body of schools was like. It’s an awesome way of seeing what happens on campus, and what the students are like. What are your specific responsibilities with the magazine? I’m a campus correspondent for Her Campus Lehigh, which means I am basically in charge of our team. My friend who started it with me and I are in charge of getting the articles written and making sure we meet our deadlines each week. We also are the liaisons between national Her Campus and our own staff/branch. Is there a Her Campus equivalent for guys? I don’t think so, but maybe there will be soon. Have you always enjoyed writing? Yes, writing and reading has always been my thing. Do you feel you learned how to write well at Duxbury High School? Yes, absolutely. I feel that my writing experience at DHS definitely prepared me for college level English classes. What are you majoring in at Lehigh? English, and I am also planning on doing the five year masters of education program at Lehigh. Has it been difficult juggling schoolwork and friends with the demands of the magazine? I have learned how to juggle everything, but during the first part of the year I definitely had a hard time managing my time. Going to college was a huge adjustment for me, and it took a while to settle down. The trick is learning when to work and when to play. What do you hope to do after graduating from college? My dream has always been to be an English teacher, so that is hopefully what I’ll be doing. What is your favorite magazine and why? My favorite magazine is probably People because it has a wide range of topics, and they include serious things as well as fun celebrity gossip and fashion. Favorite book? As of now, probably The Hunger Games. I just read it over Spring Break and absolutely loved it. I can’t wait for the movie. Favorite quote? “Be Who You Are and Say What You Feel Because Those Who Mind Don’t Matter and Those Who Matter Don’t Mind.” – Dr. Seuss Do you have any hobbies? Club field hockey, golf, Her Campus, and I am also a member of the Gamma Phi Beta sorority here at Lehigh. Where can we find you when you’re not writing for Her Campus or studying? Hanging out with my friends or doing some sort of community service with my sorority. Who inspires you the most? My dad inspires me so much. He is the strongest person I know. Do you miss Duxbury? Yes! I miss Duxbury so much. I think that I definitely took it for granted, and how easy and safe my life was. |
