| Renaming Blairhaven, readers’ suggestions |

The Clipper recently profiled the soon-to-be opened town park now known as Blairhaven. Conservation Officer Joe Grady said officials are seeking a new name for the property and we asked for your suggestions. Here are few submitted by readers. “Why not name it after a Duxbury resident who gave the ultimate sacrifice for us, Timothy Steele?” – Greg Brousseau It’s apparent that the life and death of Lt. Timothy Steele has affected all of us in town, whether or not we knew him or his family personally. Many suggestions have come forth to consider naming the new schools after him. If that does not happen then this would be another beautiful way to honor him. Mary Lampert is another citizen worth honoring. She has worked tirelessly over the years to protect our community with Pilgrim Watch. I have always admired her and appreciated her efforts to keep Duxbury and South Shore residents safe. And my last thought was since there are so many unsung heroes and residents past, present, and hopefully in our future....perhaps it would be prudent to name the park after all of them with something like Freedom Park or Liberty Park (the name of Lt Steele’s young daughter). Perhaps someday a plaque of some sort could list the names of these great residents who have given so much so that we can enjoy this life as we know it. – Heather Edwards Because of Olga Owens Huckins (1901 - 1968) editor and writer, whose devotion to nature helped inspire “Silent Spring,” written by her friend and colleague, Rachel Carson, I feel a park would be a perfect tribute to Huckins’ memory. A personal letter written to Huckins from Carson on October 3, 1962 illustrates why it should be renamed The Olga Owens Huckins Park: “… I think that even you have forgotten, however, that it was not just the copy of your letter to the newspaper but your personal letter to me that started it all. In it you told what had happened and your feelings about the prospect of a new and bigger [DDT] spraying and begged me to find someone in Washington who could help. It was in the course of finding that someone that I realized that I must write the book…” The book’ referred to is “Silent Spring” which began the environmental movement. Please consider choosing this name in honor of what Olga Owens Huckins tried to do for us here in Duxbury as well as protecting all living beings. – Judi Vose My suggestion for a name for the Blairhaven Park is Taxbury Park. – Mark Winchester |
