First Lt. Timothy Steele kisses his 1-year-old daughter Liberty following his unit's deployment ceremony at Ft. Drum on March 3, 2011. Steele, a member of the 3rd Brigade Combat Team of the 10th Mountain Division, was killed in Afghanistan this week. Photo courtesy John Berry / The Post-Standard of Syracuse, NY. U.S. Army Lieutenant Timothy Steele of Duxbury was killed Tuesday by a roadside bomb in southern Afghanistan. The cause of death was listed as hostile fire from an improvised explosive device, reportedly a pressure plated mine. Lt. Steele was serving in the NATO led International Security Assistance Force. Lt. Steele, 25, was a resident of Standish Street and is one of ten children of John and Mary Ellen Steele. Steele's parents are flying to Dover Air Force Base in Delaware to meet the plane carrying their son’s body home to the United States, the Patriot Ledger reported Wednesday afternoon.
Steele is the first Duxbury casualty of the war in Iraq or Afghanistan, according to the Duxbury Interfaith Council. Lt. Steele, who graduated from West Point, was part of the 3rd Brigade Combat Team that shipped out of Fort Drum, New York. For an article on the brigade's deployment, including a photo of Steele and his young daughter, check this link from Syracuse.com. Then Cadet Steele was pictured below after completing Cadet Basic Training at the U. S. Military Academy. He entered the military academy on June 27, 2005. A graduate of DHS class of 2004, Steele said at the time he planned to graduate from West Point in 2009 and be commissioned a second lieutenant in the U. S. Army. As of Thursday afternoon no funeral arrangements have been announced. We will post an update as soon as any additional information is available.
