"It feels great it's been a long hard campaign," said Webster. "I'm looking forward to the next two years." Asked what he thought was the issue that took him to victory, he said, " I promised not to vote to raise voters' taxes and I kept that promise. And I'm going to make sure the minority voice is heard on Beacon Hill."

The sixth Plymouth District includes precincts in Duxbury and Halifax in addition to the entire town of Pembroke and Hanson. In Duxbury, Webster received 2,779, or 61 percent of the votes, while 1,806, or 39 percent of voters supported Hanley.

There are 10,000 registered voters in Duxbury. Town Clerk Nancy Oates said the total voter turnout in Duxbury was 7,186.

The polls opened at 6 a.m. and supporters of each candidate lined the driveway of Duxbury Middle School, hoping to sway undecided voters. Jeff King of King Phillips Path and Rita Strong of Tremont Street arrived at DMS at 6 a.m. At 8:30 a.m., the pair remained at their post holding signs for Webster.

"He's fiscally conservative," King said. "He's done a wonderful job for the district."

"He's in touch with the people. He participates in events around town and at Town Hall. He's visible," Strong said.

Across the driveway from Webster's supporters, constituents for Hanley smiled and waved at passing cars. Cindi Buckley of Summer Street and Fred Bif Kerle, also of Summer Street, said they had been sporting Hanley signs since 7 a.m.

"He genuinely cares about Duxbury," Buckley said. "He doesn't forget anyone. He would do great things for our town."

"He sold me. He hasn't forgotten where he comes from," Kerle said. "He has a passion for people."

The state representative race was not the only choice facing voters on Tuesday. Incumbent Robert Hedlund (R-Weymouth) faced Democrat Stephen Lynch of Marshfield. Hedlund won 4,301 to 2,572.

In Duxbury, 3,133 voted for the Democratic Deval Patrick/Tim Murray ticket, 3,507 for Republican Kerry Healey/Reed Hillman, 395 for Independents Christy Mihos/John Sullivan and 114 for Green-Rainbow Party candidates Grace Ross/Martina Robinson.
