Prop 2 1/2 Task Force Named

This week Town Manager Richard MacDonald named a ten-person task force consisting of town officials and citizens to investigate the town's options concerning the FY09 budget, including the possibility of a Proposition 2 1/2 override. This week Town Manager Richard MacDonald named a ten-person task force consisting of town officials and citizens to investigate the town's options concerning the FY09 budget, including the possibility of a Proposition 2 1/2 override.

The task force includes MacDonald, Finance Director John Madden, Selectman Betsy Sullivan, School Superintendent Sue Skeiber, School Committee members Anne Ward and Karen Wong, Ken McCarthy of the Finance Committee, Frank Mangione of the Fiscal Advisory Committee, former selectman John Tuffy and local businessman Shawn Dahlen, who also serves on many town committee.

The task force will begin meeting the week of April 23, said MacDonald. The purpose is to prepare for the FY09 budget, which officials have said will be challenging due to decreased revenues and higher expenses. The committee may review the town's debt and its capital needs as well as recommend creating a capital expenses spending policy.

In other business, MacDonald informed selectmen that two public works projects, Hall's Corner drainage work and seawall, would begin soon. The drainage improvement project is expected to interrupt traffic and affect local business at Hall's Corner during the construction. This project must be completed by June 30. Selectmen plan to have a public information session with the contractor for the drainage project before it begins.

MacDonald also said that the repairs to the seawall on Duxbury beach will begin immediately and he expects equipment to be delivered to the beach this week. The bids for this project, which the Special Town Meeting approved in March, came in around $250,000, which is lower than the $350,000 appropriation. The state will reimburse Duxbury $164,000 if the work is completed by June 30, which MacDonald expects it will be.

MacDonald also informed selectmen that Water Department office manager Louise Hatfield died suddenly over Easter weekend. Hatfield of Marshall Street was hired eight years ago as secretary to the Board of Health, said MacDonald.
