| Beacon Hill: Webster statement on budget lunch |

Representative Daniel Webster (R-Pembroke) recently hosted a state budget luncheon with the Town Administrators and Managers from the four towns in his legislative district. The meeting centered on the Commonwealth’s Fiscal Year 2011 budget outlook and a discussion on how the state’s flagging economy may impact future spending plans in the towns of Duxbury, Halifax, Hanson and Pembroke. “It has always been a top priority of mine to remain accessible to community officials and vote to hold local aid appropriations harmless; especially given the uncertain economic path our state currently faces. It is imperative to maintain a clear and open line of communication with municipal budget planners,†stated Webster. “The 351 cities and towns across our state have been forced to compensate for further reductions to local aid. This meeting was an excellent opportunity for everyone involved to plan for potential economic hurdles moving forward, and discuss some of the legislative initiatives that will help reduce local costs.†Specifically, Webster warned the attendees that the luxury of one-time cash infusions from both the state and federal government will not be accessible in the future; stating that the Commonwealth’s “rainy day fund†and federal stimulus monies are all but depleted. Town officials continued to signal the need for the legislature’s approval of municipal health care plan design, a proposal Representative Webster staunchly supports. “Studies suggest that the adoption of health care plan design, on the municipal level, can save up to $200 million annually. These are real cost savings for the towns in my district and I will continue to advocate for its passage in the legislature. Now is the time to think outside the box in terms of cost savings for our municipalities. We can no longer afford to pass the buck on this issue,†stated Webster. |
