Statement from Webster on illegal immigration legislation
By Administrator
Sunday, June 06, 2010 05:05 PM
A recent immigration proposal (House Docket # 5043) offered by State Representative Daniel Webster (R-Pembroke) has gained the support of lawmakers across the state.  Webster’s legislation would implement penalties ranging from 2½ - 5 years in prison and fines as high as $10,000 for employers who knowingly hire illegal immigrants.

“It’s encouraging to see my colleagues offer bipartisan support for an important proposal such as this.  The writing is on the wall…there must be a more thorough process in Massachusetts when it comes to illegal immigration.  By penalizing employers who knowingly hire undocumented aliens, we remove the incentives for those looking to enter our state illegally.  Since the federal government has failed to address the illegal immigration problem, it’s important that states fill the gap,” stated Webster.

Growing unrest over an attempted bombing in Times Square and Arizona’s adoption of a stringent immigration policy has thrust the issue of illegal immigration into the public spotlight.  In fact, two of the Times Square bombing suspects were living in Massachusetts.

“We can no longer afford to turn a blind eye to illegal immigration.  The federal government has neglected to roll up its sleeves and tackle this difficult question.  Each day, we see legal Massachusetts residents denied public benefits or jobs because the waiting list is filled with applicants who are residing in our state illegally.  By allowing illegal aliens a free pass when it comes to employment opportunities and public subsidies, we are again sending the wrong message to the taxpayer.  The residents of this state deserve better,” concluded Webster.
