| Statement from Webster on illegal immigration legislation |

State Representative Daniel Webster (R-Pembroke) recently iled legislation to punish individuals who knowingly hire illegal aliens. Webster’s proposal comes on the heels of the Massachusetts House of Representatives’ refusal to debate an amendment requiring federal background checks for anyone applying for state subsidies. “Enough is enough. I have joined my Republican colleague, State Representative Jeff Perry (R-Sandwich), on numerous occasions to address the issue of illegal immigration here in the Commonwealth. The federal government has refused to address our country’s immigration problem. The Majority Party in the House has repeatedly sidestepped a number of proposals that would clamp down on the influx of illegal immigrants entering our state. Frankly, the problem with undocumented aliens has reached a tipping point where the Commonwealth now faces both fiscal instability and threats to public safety,†stated Webster. Under Representative Webster’s proposal, individuals who hire illegal aliens will face a series of harsh penalties. Specifically, a monetary fine ranging from $5,000-$10,000 would be imposed, in addition to a prison sentence of up to 2 ½ years. Those convicted of second or subsequent offences would face of an increased jail sentence of 5 years or more. “In my opinion, both the Patrick Administration and the Attorney General’s office have totally dropped the ball on this issue. The recent arrests of suspected terrorists in Brookline and Watertown were proof-positive that the refusal to curb illegal immigration here in Massachusetts has brought about international implications. It is my hope that by penalizing employers who hire undocumented workers, we can eliminate any incentive for illegal aliens considering a move to our state and abusing the system,†stated Webster. |
