Calling it a bipartisan victory, Representative Daniel Webster (R-Pembroke) praised his colleagues in the Massachusetts House of Representatives for adopting a Republican sponsored amendment to protect the taxpayers of the state from a further tax hike. As you may recall, the House Ways and Means Committee had offered a proposal which would allow municipalities to raise property taxes outside of the constraints of the so-called “Proposition 2 ½†limits without a local vote. Representative Webster fought on the House floor for the inclusion of an amendment striking out the language that would permit the increase of property taxes absent an override vote by local residents. “This was a major win for the taxpayers of the state. The insatiable appetite for increased spending and higher taxes is alive and well on Beacon Hill, and I will continue to call out these proposals for what they are…reckless,†said Representative Webster. Citizens for Limited Taxation estimated that passage of this bill, with the original language included, would cost Massachusetts taxpayers more than $500 million in increased property taxes. |
