Webster statement on local aid resolution
By Administrator
Sunday, March 21, 2010 07:11 PM

State Representative Daniel Webster (R-Pembroke) recently condemned a procedural move advanced by House Democratic leadership to squash debate on a local aid resolution.  Webster and his Republican colleagues sponsored the proposal during the most recent meeting of the House of Representatives.

The aim of Webster’s proposal was to offer cities and towns a baseline funding level for local aid and education distribution, thus providing municipal budget writers better predictability in crafting their local budgets.  Unfortunately, the Chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee objected to the suspension of House rules, ending any further discussion of the resolution.  As a single objection to the suspension of a House rule prevents further debate, the majority party quashed Webster’s initiative before its merits could be weighed.

“I am astounded by the manner in which the Speaker’s deputies killed any chance for a fair debate to occur on this proposal.  For the Ways and Means Chairman to stand before a full assembly of the House, and reject consideration of this resolution is another glaring example of the disconnect between the Democratic super-majority and the people’s desire for transparency in state government,” stated Webster. “Sadly, the parliamentary shenanigans continue on Beacon Hill, and I will continue to hold the Democratic Party accountable for these blatant abuses of power.”
