Just as the December sun peeked over the horizon and broke through the clouds, a dozen men and women were hard at work at the Duxbury Bay Maritime School, racing to beat themselves in a true test of “mind over matter.”

As 2012 comes to a close, Duxbury reflects on its 375th anniversary. After all the events, it is clear this special birthday celebration was just that: special.

When a member of the National Guard interrupted Duxbury resident Bruce Katz’s business meeting, he had no idea what was going on.

In the last 100 years there have been two World Wars, 18 presidents, the invention of the television, development of the Internet and the turn of a new millennium. This month, Duxbury celebrates two very special residents who have witnessed all of these events and more.

The Board of Selectmen has chosen attorney Arthur Kreiger as Duxbury’s next town counsel. Selectmen voted unanimously Monday to give the position to Krieger, who has been serving as interim town counsel since May.

This week, Duxbury selectmen closed the warrant for the 2013 annual town meeting that contains only 33 articles – one of the shortest agendas in recent memory.

A new town counsel will be chosen next week, Duxbury’s selectmen decided Monday. After interviewing three finalists for the position last week and discussing their thoughts at this Monday’s weekly meeting, selectmen agreed they needed more time and information before making a final decision.

Police are searching for an attempted home invader who kicked in the front door of a house on Lincoln Street around 1 p.m. on Monday afternoon.

Gillian Smith, who previously wrote for the Patriot Ledger, has been named News Editor. Gillian will work with Editor-in-Chief David Mittell Jr., himself a Duxbury native and former Patriot Ledger and Providence Journal columnist.

A native of Cape Cod, Gillian graduated from Ithaca College, New York, in May with a degree in journalism and previously worked for Boston Magazine and the Associated Press. After writing for online publications for a number of years, Gillian is pleased to be working again with newspaper and ink and is excited to explore Duxbury and all it has to offer.

Creating affordable housing is one of the goals of the Community Preservation Act, but the reality of moving affordable housing projects forward is both expensive and time consuming, advocates told the Community Preservation Committee at their recent meeting.
