Winslow Hallowell, 85

Winslow Hallowell of New London, N.H., formerly of Duxbury, died June 3 at Dartmouth Hitchcock Hospital after a brief illness.  He was 85.

Mr. Hallowell was born in Minneapolis, Minn. and moved to Concord at the age of eight.  He attended The Middlesex School and entered the Army where he was stationed in Germany.  When back in the states, he met Nancy Snow, married and raised four children.

Fredric C. Hammel, 67

Fredric C. Hammel, 67 of Duxbury, died on Sunday, June 3 at Brigham and Women’s hospital surrounded by his family. He was born in Quincy on July 14, 1944 and grew up in Milton, graduating from Milton High School in 1962.  He graduated from Syracuse University in 1966 with a degree in mechanical engineering.  He began his career as a sales engineer with Westinghouse Electric Corp. in their Power Systems group, continuing with EDS as an account executive with PLM Solutions and recently retiring in January of 2012 from Siemens Corp. as manager of Northeast Channel Operations.  Mr. Hammel was a member of the Duxbury Yacht Club, an avid golfer, boater, and photographer.  Mr. Hammel will be remembered as the consummate family man.

Albert Henry McClure, 92

Albert Henry McClure, age 92, died suddenly on June 9, 2012 at Jordan Hospital in Plymouth. 

Mr. McClure was born on March 23, 1920 to Arthur and Rose (Duesel) McClure in Worcester. He was a graduate of South High School, Worcester Academy, and attended two years at Mass State before joining the Air Force in WW II.  He was a flight navigational instructor on B-17s and B-29s on airbases in Wyoming, Colorado, and Texas. After the war, he was in sales for National Cash Register and Formsprag Company, and became a manufacturing representative for his own company in Worcester specializing in mechanical clutches.

Ruth L. McLaughlin, 80, of Kingston, formerly of Jamaica Plain, died June 4. She leaves her children, Michael McLaughlin and his wife Patricia of Duxbury; grandchildren, Michael, Kristen, and Laurie McLaughlin; and her brother, Francis McLaughlin of N.H. A funeral was held on June 8 and Mrs. McLaughlin was buried at Forest Hills Cemetery, 95 Forest Hills Ave., (Jamaica Plain) Boston 02130. Memorial donations may be made to Mass. Humane Society, PO Box 890127, E. Weymouth, MA 02189.

 
Peter R. Kitchener, 69

Peter R. Kitchener, 69 of Duxbury, died suddenly on Monday, May 28 at Tufts Medical Center surrounded by his family. Mr. Kitchener was born in Beverly, the son of the late Mavis (Morrill) and Charles Kitchener.  He graduated from Beverly High School and Northeastern University. He served six years in the United States Air Force.  He loved the ocean, golf and Vizsla dogs, especially his beloved Barney, Kelsey and Wheezer. He was the President of Advanced Interconnects Marketing (AIM) for 16 years.  Previously he was a staff engineer at MIT Lincoln Lab in Lexington for 18 years.

Duxbury Beach was a shocking shade of red which many residents labeled ‘red tide.’ Not so, said Duxbury Harbormaster Don Beers, who wanted the public to know this wasn’t the harmful algae blooms known as red tide which can be toxic to shellfish and the humans who eat them.

Single car crash; one transported

(Duxbury Police Lt. Lewis Chubb surveys the scene of an accident that occurred  on Harrison Street Wednesday afternoon. One man was transported to South Shore Hospital.)

A single car crash on Harrison Street late Wednesday afternoon resulted in a Duxbury man being transported by ambulance to South Shore Hospital. Though MedFlight was called in by first responders, police said one was not available.

The victim’s name is being withheld pending notification of his family. No other passengers were involved.

Hanover man arrested for OUI 2nd offense

A Puritan Way couple out for a walk last week was approached by a man driving a pick-up truck who appeared disoriented and tried to grab the woman’s hand.

The couple reported the incident to police noting they didn’t feel threatened but were concerned for the welfare of the man. While Duxbury Police broadcast the report, DPD dispatch received another call from Chandler Street of a similar incident with a matching description of the man and truck. The caller was able to identifying which direction the truck was traveling and within minutes, Patrolman Timothy Wigmore located the suspect.

Fire Department makes save on Saquish

A Georgia family visiting Saquish had to be rescued by the Duxbury Fire Department when their SUV was caught in floodwaters due to an extraordinary high tide and northeast winds Sunday night.

The family had to flee their SUV and take shelter in a nearby home as three-feet of water surrounded their vehicle.

After four years of hard work, of forging lasting friendships, of heartthrobs and heartaches, it was finally here. As the band played Pomp and Circumstance, the seniors in Duxbury colors — young men in green robes and young women in white robes — walked, strode and sauntered in sky high wedges, funky flip flops, natty sneakers and polished loafers, under the floral arches and on to their places of honor on the stage at the Performing Arts Center for their final moments of high school Saturday. This was the class of 2012 at their graduation.

Town counsel Robert Troy fired

An ongoing civil suit against the Town of Duxbury brought by Johnson Golf Management and ensuing accusations that Town Counsel Robert Troy was “not being truthful” in statements made at an October 4, 2010 Board of Selectmen hearing and before Middlesex District Court have resulted in the dismissal of Troy by the current Board of Selectmen. At the May 29 meeting, the board also voted to waive attorney-client privilege with regard to the Johnson Golf suit.

In an April 18 Clipper interview, Troy, who was town counsel for 26 years, denies he intentionally made false statements and that if he misspoke, it was because he believed what he said to be true at the time.
