Duxbury Lecture to focus on challenges of global conservation projects
Wednesday, February 20, 2013 10:56 AM

What happens when a problem stretches over borders and cultures and is just too big and complex to be addressed by any single organization?

As the director of the Manomet Center’s Shorebird Recovery Project, Dr. Charles Duncan faces this challenge every day. On Feb. 27, Duncan will deliver a talk at the Duxbury Free Library on “New Approaches to Solving Conservation Problems at a Really Big Scale.”

The event will run from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Conserving long distance migrants – like shorebirds – requires creative and new solutions, and some of them will surprise you. Duncan will share success stories from several sources, the lessons he has learned from them, and the new paths that have been forged in global conservation efforts.

The Manomet Center has been developing cooperative and scientific solutions to complex environmental challenges for more than 40 years. The Shorebird Recovery Project works to restore and maintain shorebird populations in the Western Hemisphere. Manomet scientists conduct their work from the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in Alaska to Tierra del Fuego at the southern tip of Chile.

Charles Duncan joined Manomet in 2003 as Director of the Shorebird Recovery Project. He also serves as Director of the Executive Office of the Western Hemisphere Shorebird Reserve Network, a coalition of 83 sites in 13 nations committed to the conservation of shorebird species and their habitats across the Americas.

Admission is free but registration is required. Sign up at http://manometconservation.eventbrite.com/#.
