A brazen daytime break-in on Monday led Duxbury Police on a foot chase into the woods behind Tremont Street and resulted in the arrest of a Kingston man.

Harold Hadaway, Jr., whose last known address was an apartment in Kingston, was arrested after a Tremont Street resident called police to report that a man knocked on his door asking to use the phone after his car broke down. The homeowner admitted the man into the residence and let him call his girlfriend. After the suspect left the area, the homeowner looked for a car on the street, but seeing none, he called police.

“We put out advisories from time to time and this is exactly the kind of suspicious behavior we speak of,” said Duxbury Police Chief Matthew Clancy. “This was a good judgment call by the resident.”

Police responded immediately while juggling a car accident and a robbery alert from Kingston. Patrols searched the area for approximately 30 minutes before newly appointed Officer Daniel McGonagle spotted an individual walking along Tremont Street. After turning around his patrol car, McGonagle lost sight of the man. Moments later, McGonagle again spotted the suspect and gave chase.

“At some point, Officer Daniel McGonagle saw the individual and the individual ran off into the woods,” said Clancy. “He gave chase into the woods in the area of 904 Tremont Street, near the DPW Facility.  Officer Chris Mori assisted and helped detain the suspect. When Officer McGonagle first laid hands on (Hadaway), the suspect was resistive.”

At the time of his arrest, said Clancy, Hadaway gave a statement to the police that he broke into a house. After a search of his person, police recovered jewelry from Hadaway’s pockets.

According to Clancy, this isn’t Hadaway’s first run-in with police.

“He has an extensive record with law enforcement that includes this type of activity,” said Clancy. “He was recently detained by Duxbury Police in the area of a house break-in. At that time we didn’t have enough evidence to link him to that crime. We are now working the forensic end of that case. (Hadaway) is also a suspect in several other break-ins in Kingston and Plymouth.”

Charges in the Monday case are pending.
