Blairhaven structures demolished

The long awaited Blairhaven Park is soon to be a reality. Wrecking crews were on the scene this week, demolishing the various structures and carting away debris. Conservation Administrator Joe Grady said he hopes to have the property open to pedestrian visitors within days.

“Demolition should be completed by the end of the week,” said Grady. “Then the (Department of Public Works) will continue the clean up. We’re removing miscellaneous fence along the landing -- there’s some chain-link and overgrowth – and we’ll put up a split rail fence around June 21.” Residents not within walking distance of the town park will have to wait a bit longer to enjoy the waterfront property that fronts Kingston Bay. A 12-car parking lot at the top of the boundary along Crescent Street won’t be installed until at least the end of the season. The plan is that over time the lot will be extended to accommodate 22 cars.

“We have a proposal from an engineering firm for a parking lot,” said Grady. “There are still several steps involved, but we’re rolling.”

Purchased by the town with $3 million in Community Preservation Act funds at the 2011 Town Meeting, the property boasts 80 deep-water moorings with ready access to the ocean and an open air chapel with benches and a hulking oak ring altar, all sheltered by a grove of cedar trees.

While the town has yet to formally designate Blairhaven’s use, it’s expected the Board of Selectmen will soon approve the recommendations of the Blairhaven Committee. Grady said he hopes to see picnickers and those who simply want to enjoy the tranquility of a wide open space with stunning bay views sooner rather than later.

Said Grady, “I would hope as soon as we put the fence in, people will be able to come and enjoy the view.”
