A Georgia family visiting Saquish had to be rescued by the Duxbury Fire Department when their SUV was caught in floodwaters due to an extraordinary high tide and northeast winds Sunday night. The family had to flee their SUV and take shelter in a nearby home as three-feet of water surrounded their vehicle. “We responded with a boat and two forest fire trucks,” said Fire Chief Kevin Nord. “The water was anywhere from a foot and a half deep to three feet deep. We eventually sent two persons in a four-wheel drive forest fire truck through the water and traveled a mile or so before we reached them, and transported them back to the road where we were staged on high ground halfway out Duxbury Beach Road.” Nord said first responders checked the victims at the scene, but none needed medical attention. “The victims were a young child, her mother and the grandmother,” said Nord. “We where concerned for hypothermia, but all three were checked and refused transport.” While everyone was safe, the vehicle was lost to the surf. The nor’easter continued into Tuesday night and wreaked havoc on Gurnet Road, though no calls were reported. |
