Gone fishin': Mackerel and stripers still biting
By Skip Cornell

INLAND REPORT: As fresh water temperatures rise fishing is starting to slow down. Most of the best fishing now is in the early morning or just before dusk. With salt water fishing getting under way our inland report will stop until the fall trout stockings.

COASTAL REPORT: Mackerel are still here and everyday striper fishing gets better. Large schools of stripers are at the Race at Provincetown. Try fishing the drop off of the Race. Best baits here are live mackerel or small harbor Pollock -- also, Shimano jigs are working well. Most of the fish are in the 34 to 38 inch range with an occasional 40-inch fish. Off the east end of the Cape Cod Canal there are still large schools of mackerel with some good size stripers under them. Over at Plymouth and Duxbury Bay there are still schools of mackerel and some harbor pollock that can be jigged up to use for live bait for stripers. Try fishing for the mackerel and pollock from the outside sea bell no.1 to Brewer’s Ledge. The best striper spots in Duxbury are Brown’s Bank, Clark’s Island and the Cordage Channel. There are stripers being caught all the way to the Powder Point Bridge.

From Warren’s Cove to the Cordage Channel large schools of hungry bass are feeding. Try casting plugs to them. Flounder fishing is good but not many anglers are targeting them. Around  High Pines Ledge stripers are still being caught with live mackerel and by trolling plugs or umbrella rigs. Over in Green Harbor fishing off the jetties has been okay with a few keeper stripers being caught after sunset and early in the morning.

Around the New Inlet at the North River mackerel fishing has been tough. Most of the mackerel have been found in deep water off the North River bell and the Scituate bell with 70 feet of water being the best places. Try trolling Sibiki rigs real slowly. This is very productive when they are hard to find. Stripers are being caught off Third and Fourth Cliffs and at the spit inside the mouth of the North River. First and Second Cliffs also have had their share of stripers as well as Peggotty and Egypt beaches.

Out at Stellwagen Bank fishing for cod has been slow but haddock and pollock fishing remains hot. There have been reports of tuna on the Bank but no one has caught one. Tuna commercial season opened on June, 1. As the month of June progresses, fishing should be red hot. Tuna season should be good for both recreational and commercial categories. Make sure you stay up to date on daily bag limits as they can change at any moment. Luckily we have had no large influx of dogfish but it is still early.

Don’t forget to take a kid fishing!
