INLAND REPORT: Trout and fresh water bass fishing remains good. Even with the nasty wind and weather we have been getting, fishing in our local lakes and ponds remains on the good side. Lots of stocked trout have made anglers happy at Little and Long Ponds in Plymouth along with some ponds fed by the Jones River on Route 80. All our local bass ponds are producing some largemouth bass along with some nice smallies. The Indian Head River at the Hanover-Pembroke line has the beginning of a shad run. Hot pink shad darts are the hot lure to catch some of the hard fighting shad. Above the dam there are reports of good trout fishing along with some perch and hornpout. COASTAL REPORT: They’re back! There are reports of small to keeper size stripers everywhere. These fish have been making their northern migration and now are feeding heavily. Best lures are top water plugs or 6.5 inch Shankas in bubble gum or green glow. In the Duxbury Bay area, stripers can be found in all the local hot spots-Clark’s Island and on top of the sand flats in the Cordage Channel and all the way up to the Powder Point Bridge area. If you can catch some mackerel for live bait, try fishing around Clark’s Island. Outside Plymouth Harbor, around near the entrance bell, there are mackerel that you can jig up on Sibiki rigs. Out in 70 to 80 feet of water there are still some cod. Best bet here is clams or cod jigs. Over at Green Harbor at the Red Can flounder fishing is just starting. Sea worms and clams will work well here. At Farnham’s Rock you can find some schools of mackerel and cod fish. Up at the mouth of the North and South Rivers, in 50 to 70 feet of water, you can find some mackerel to live line. In the North River schoolies and just keeper size stripers can be found all the way up to Mary’s Boat Yard. Casting top water plugs or 6.5 inch Shankas in green glow or bubble gum will also work. Small umbrella rigs will also work as these fish are very hungry. In the South River the first sand hill at the entrance is holding some schoolies, and fishing is good all the way past the Marshfield Yacht Club. Soon the herring will be dropping back and fishing will get even better. Out on Stellwagen Bank, cod fishing rules have changed. As of May 1 please check with the MA Marine Fisheries and NOAA Fisheries. Now the bag limit is 9 cod with a minimum length of 19 inches. For now the best ground fishing on Stellwagen Bank is on the western edge. Lots of cod and pollock along with some haddock. Cod are coming on jigs and teasers with some pollock catches too. Haddock fishing is in a little deeper water and clams are your best bet. Please watch the weather as sea temperatures are still on the cold side. Better to be safe than sorry! Soon good weather and great fishing will be upon us. Enjoy! |
