As part of our ongoing observation of the 150th anniversary of the Civil War, The Duxbury Rural and Historical Society offers a glimpse into the lives of Duxbury’s Union soldiers. David Meechan – on the Banks of the York River April 18, 1862 – Bridges finished. We worked all day building a road for advancing nearer the enemy with the big guns. Hot and disagreeable with picks and shovels. Edward Baker – April 18 Friday, 1862 – Got underweigh and ran down to Charleston and after lying near the Susquehanna a few hours, ran down near Stono and anchored. A schooner ran in her a few days since. The Merrimac and her companions Yorktown and Jamestown came down to Hampton Roads a few days since and while all were watching the former, the two other vessels walked off with three of our transports! For daily Civil War journal updates, please visit the Duxbury Rural and Historical Society’s Web site at duxburyhistory.org and under the blog heading, click on the individual in whom you’re interested. |
