As part of our ongoing observation of the 150th anniversary of the Civil War, The Duxbury Rural and Historical Society offers a glimpse into the lives of Duxbury’s Union soldiers. David Meechan – April 4, 1862 – A pleasant day. We broke camp at daylight.  Knapsacks rode easy. Marched to Big Bethel and beyond. We heard firing ahead.  Supposed our cavalry were driving the rebel skirmishes.  We passed the lines of rifle pits and breastworks where our three months men were fighting months ago. Saw the spot where Lieutenant Greble was killed.  We have been driving the enemy before us. The regiments ahead are having all the fun.  We halted at night about 5 miles beyond the road to Yorktown. Surrounded by bivouacs of the whole army.
