Selectmen celebrated the 100th anniversary of the Girl Scouts this week with a proclamation honoring the organization. Girl Scouts of all ages filled the selectmen’s meeting Monday night for the ceremony. Selectmen Chairman Shawn Dahlen read the proclamation and then he and Selectmen Ted Flynn and Chris Donato presented a plaque recognizing their centennial to the Girl Scouts. “We pause with pride for this moment in recognition that the Girl Scouts of today will be the leaders of tomorrow, and in the hope, that they will serve the town of Duxbury, the United States of America, and the world,” read Dahlen The Girl Scouts was founded by Juliette Gordon Low in 1912 in Savannah, Georgia. First known as the American Girl Guides, the organization focused on sewing, cooking and camping. It has grown from the initial 18 girls to its current 3.7 million members worldwide. Girl Scouts now concentrates on developing leadership skills with an emphasis on science and community service activities. In Duxbury, the first Girl Scouts troop began in 1917 at the Partridge Academy. In 1927, Duxbury Girl Scouts were re-introduced to the community and now there are 208 scouts and 117 adult volunteers involved in the six levels of scouting: Daisy, Brownie, Junior, Cadette, Senior and Ambassador. Duxbury Girl Scouts are committed to helping their community, and they provide assistance to both the Interfaith Council with holiday projects and to the Festival of Trees. |
