Director of Public Works Tom Daley said that effective Wednesday, residents can find the mall by entering the transfer station, taking a right after the clothing collection area and following the “Duxbury Mall” signs to a loop road that was the former drop-off area for brush and leaves. That area will now contain a pick-up and drop-off point for a number of items and provide browsers with more parking than at its previous location. The area will also contain the book and knick-knack shacks as well as areas for mattresses and other furniture. “The move is to free up congestion mainly,” said Daley. “The transfer station is growing as the population of Duxbury is growing and we were seeing a lot of congestion in the mall area, especially on Saturdays and Sundays.” Daley added that the main goal of all the recent changes at the transfer station are to spread things out and make the area safer for residents. “People can now come in, look around [at the mall] and then take the road right to the trash pit to drop off trash,” he said. Daley also said that a few new recycling programs are underway at the transfer station, including one by the Duxbury Garden Club to recycle toner and printer cartridges. Next to the newspaper recycling area, residents will see a box where they can dispose of the used cartridges. “The garden club will take these, get them recycled and get some money back, so it is a fundraising project for them,” said Daley. Next to the cartridge box is another container to dispose of old cell phones and batteries, another new endeavor. Daley said that the town has also started new plastic, tin and glass removal with DeRosa Recycling. Under the new agreement, DeRosa will provide the transfer station with containers for each material, haul what’s collected and recycle it for free, said Daley. “We were hauling [these items] before and getting a minimal return for the town,” said Daley. With glass, for example, Daley said the town used to get charged for recycling brown and green glass and get just as much back for what they recycled in clear glass. Under the new process, Daley estimated the town will save $3,000 a year from DeRosa collecting, hauling and recycling the glass for them versus DPW employees.
