Selectman Christopher Donato has requested a special meeting of the Board of Selectmen in executive session on Friday to discuss the contract of Police Chief Mark DeLuca’s contract, as well as other matters.

In a letter sent last week, DeLuca learned that his contract would not be renewed in November. Donato said in an e-mail Tuesday that it would be “a huge mistake” not to renew the contract.”

“I respectfully request an Executive Session of the Duxbury Board of Selectmen to discuss the contract of the Duxbury Police Chief, the Duxbury Police Chief’s use of volunteers, and the trip of certain members of the Duxbury Police Department to Washington D.C. to honor the service of a Duxbury police officer who was killed in the line of duty,” Donato wrote in an e-mail, dated June 9 and sent to the Board of Selectmen as well as town officials.

Donato asked that the meeting be scheduled for Friday at 9:30 a.m.

The meeting was not posted as of press time.

Massachusetts Open Meeting law requires that all meeting be posted in a public place 48 hours prior to the meeting taking place.

The law does allow for “emergency meetings,” but defines such meetings as “a sudden, generally unexpected occurrence or set of circumstances demanding immediate action.” An emergency meeting may not be called to deal with the needs or a person or entity not related to the governmental body, the law states.

Selectmen Chairwoman Betsy Sullivan did not immediately return a phone call seeking comment on the requested meeting. Selectman Jon Witten said Tuesday that he had not heard from Town Hall if the meeting would be held. He said the process for determining if such a meeting request would be granted is “informal.”

“With a three member board, it’s not uncommon for one member [to request a special meeting.]” Witten said. He said such requests are usually honored.
