Winslow Hallowell of New London, N.H., formerly of Duxbury, died June 3 at Dartmouth Hitchcock Hospital after a brief illness.  He was 85.

Mr. Hallowell was born in Minneapolis, Minn. and moved to Concord at the age of eight.  He attended The Middlesex School and entered the Army where he was stationed in Germany.  When back in the states, he met Nancy Snow, married and raised four children.  While raising his family, Mr. Hallowell took pride in growing and putting up his own vegetables, coaching youth ice hockey, fishing, hunting and sailing out on Duxbury Bay.  He was an avid birder and loved playing golf with his wife.  When she became ill, he took early retirement and moved to New Hampshire to take care of Nancy and his elderly mother, Ellen. 

After a short stint in Bristol, Maine, Mr. Hallowell moved back to New Hampshire to be with his companion and friend Katherine Boynton.  He enjoyed spending time with family, friends and his eight grandchildren, perfected the art of Nantucket basket making and while volunteering at the Canterbury Shaker Village in Canterbury, NH, built Shaker boxes. 

Mr. Hallowell was the son of the late Morris Longstreth Hallowell II and Ellen Winslow Stetson Hallowell and husband of the late Nancy Snow Hallowell.  He leaves his sons, W. Stetson Hallowell and companion Erika R. Mueller of Huntington, Stephen W. Hallowell and his wife, Moira, and David S. Hallowell and fiance, Robin Markella, all of Duxbury; his daughter, Linda H. MacNeil and her husband, Bruce, of Lincoln; eight  grandchildren, Elizabeth, Heather, Stuart, Alexander, Kelsey, Samantha, Zachary, Max and one great grandson, Oliver; two brothers, Morris L. Hallowell, III of Old Greenwich, Conn., and Eliot S. Hallowell of Concord; and his companion, Katherine Boynton of New London, N.H.
