Excluding heavy truck traffic on the residential roads North and Myrtle Streets may seem like a good idea at first, but if this rule is enacted, what will it mean for neighboring streets, like Temple, Laurel and Union, which might have to absorb this type of traffic?
The Board of Selectmen pondered this question this week after learning that Pembroke town officials would like to exclude heavy truck traffic on Pleasant Street and Spring Street in Pembroke and on Old Ocean Street in Marshfield. To accomplish this, they need Duxbury’s permission to include North and Myrtle Streets, since they connect to the roads in these neighboring towns.

Maggie Kearney eased her Jeep onto the access road that runs from the opening of Duxbury Beach all the way to the foothills of Gurnet Point. Where the sand runs deep and soft, it can be a difficult balancing act. She managed to find leverage on higher ground and shifted back and forth to where the ground offered more leverage. But this is no day at the beach for Kearney. Navigating that road could be a metaphor for her responsibilities as president of the Duxbury Beach Reservation, Inc. It’s a place she knows intimately having been a volunteer for about twenty-five years.

Emergency personnel, including the state HazMat Team, responded to Duxbury High School late yesterday afternoon when 40 members of the girls’ varsity lacrosse team complained of upper respiratory distress while practicing on the turf field. According to Duxbury Fire Captain Robert Tripp, who was on the scene, all members of the girls’ team exhibited signs of respiratory distress and complained of tasting blood.
Earlier today, a two-member team from the Department of Public Health (DPH) went to the turf field with officials from the high school, fire department and Department of Public Works to test the area and take samples.

Contrasts abound in Afghanistan. Contrasts fill the news, and barely scratch the surface. Afghan women read – 13 percent of them, the lowest female literacy rate in the world. Deh Sabz is a district on the northeast outskirts of Kabul. Ravaged by the Soviets, the rival warlords who followed the Russian tanks, the Taliban, and the air and ground forces of the U.S. and other members of the coalition, seven villages in the district now have their first ever school for girls. National and cultural resistance to teaching girls to read is countered by the Zabuli School, a private school licensed by the Afghan Ministry of Education and free to the girls who attend.

Why should we care about transparency in local government? What difference does it make? What’s the big deal if meetings are really open or not? Why does active oversight of the operation of town government and full visibility for all citizens, taxpayers, and voters of the detailed operation of Town Government matter? The answer is simple: The Duxbury Money Machine.

As a volunteer at South Shore Hospital, Anne Marie Winchester of Duxbury knows a thing or two about devoting her time to others. On April 16, she will run 26.2 miles in the Boston Marathon as a member of the hospital’s first charity-driven team. Each step of the way will be in memory of her dear friend, Kathy Frank, who lost her battle to cancer last year. We recently spoke with Anne Marie about volunteering, her marathon training and her experience as part of the South Shore Hospital team

The stark space-framed San Martí airport ill prepares us for the drive into Old Havana. We are at once enveloped in joyful and exhilarating sights and sounds, soon to be muted by others, sad and depressing. Street lighting provides glimpses of the broad tree-lined boulevards and proud neoclassical buildings. Getting closer, we enter Malecón drive. The stone seawall shelters us as well as elegant buildings from the crashing waves of the Atlantic. When we slow down or stop at an intersection, the buildings come into sharper focus and we become aware of their neglected state. Grimy masonry is chipped. Columns lack their pediments and windows are boarded over or missing. In raw openings, laundry, strung up and waving in the dim light, appear like ghosts bemoaning the fate of their elegant erstwhile homes.

Ask Susan Draper about the years of volunteer work she and her family devoted to the Arc of Greater Plymouth and she’ll say it wasn’t anything, not really. Yet both the Arc and Governor Deval Patrick beg to differ.
Draper and her entire family – husband Jamie and children Jacqui, 24, a client of the Arc; Samantha, 22; and Cameron, 19 – were honored at the State House last week by Gov. Patrick and the Department of Developmental Services (DDS) for their longstanding commitment to people with developmental disabilities.

Selectmen are looking for residents to serve on a new committee that will delve into the issue of wind power in Duxbury.
The idea for a committee dedicated to studying wind power came last month after the Alternative Energy Committee (AEC) and Duxbury Wind Wise met and agreed that such a committee would be the best way to tackle the issue.

Congressman William Keating contacted Entergy on behalf of the Town of Duxbury to ask why towns not in Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station’s Emergency Planning Zone (EPZ) have traditionally received more emergency management funds.
“We’re looking at EPZ towns and the host communities,” said Keating. “It seems to me that host communities are getting more funds than Duxbury. If you’re in an emergency zone, it seems to me you’d get more money.”

Walk into Foodie’s, head on over to the frozen dessert specialty items and featured prominently is a shelf full of 600lb. Gorillas Chocolate Chip Cookies and ice cream sandwiches with a sign taped to the freezer door: Duxbury’s own.
That’s because the oddly-named company (think about it) is owned by Duxbury’s Paula and Chris White.
“It sells great here,” said Foodie’s store manager Bobby McPhail. “I can’t keep the case filled. I think it’s great.”
