Back to school – senior edition
By Bruce Barrett
Wednesday, August 08, 2012 09:00 AM

Little kids can’t hog the fresh pencils and Crayola crayons of back-to-school time any more. The college crowd can have their microwaves, U-haul trailers, and multidimensional puzzle pieces (“How are you going to fit all that into a room with three other people, sweetie?”). End of summer is a great time for Mom and Dad, or Grammie and Grampa to plan and execute their own return to the delights of school – educational and otherwise. I promised to return to the topic for an older set of back-to-schoolers. Here’s a road map of real and unreal suggestions.

Kenneth K. Sibley
By Admin
Wednesday, August 08, 2012 09:00 AM

Kenneth K. Sibley passed away in Tillamook, Ore. on July 21. He was born in Duxbury on Sept. 24, 1926 to Arthur and Rena (King) Sibley.

Mr. Sibley was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and served the country honorably during WWII. He lived and worked in Worcester where he met Greta Clark and they were married May 29, 1959.  After living in Worcester for several years, they moved to Duxbury and eventually to Marshfield before he retired in 1987 from his work as Service and Production Manager with a Marine Compass manufacturer. They then moved to a golfing community in Florida where they both enjoyed many years of golf before moving back to Mass.

When Greta passed away in 2005, Mr. Sibley went to be with his son Curtis Sibley and daughter-in-law Christina Sibley in Tillamook, Ore.  Mr. Sibley was preceded in death by his son Curtis in 2008. He is survived by his daughter-in-law Christina of Tillamook.

At Mr. Sibley’s request, no services were held and the burial was private. Burial beside his wife Greta was at the Mayflower Cemetery, Duxbury on July 27, 2012.

Arrangements were handled by Waud’s Funeral Home in Oregon and Shepherd Funeral Home, Kingston.

Duxbury gathers to cheer on Miller
By Amy MacKinnon
Wednesday, August 08, 2012 09:00 AM

(Nichole Radke’s face says it all as the team fought to finish with a medal.  She is flanked by Shane and Sam Boussy.)

They arrived at the Duxbury Bay Maritime School (DBMS) in their red, white and blue, carrying flags and hope, all on behalf of Duxbury’s own Will Miller who rowed to fourth place in the world in the Olympics Men’s Eight Plus rowing competition.

The upstairs reception room was filled with residents and friends who took time out of their afternoon to celebrate the Millers. Bill Miller, Will Miller’s father, is a coach at the school and a 1972 Olympian in rowing himself. Many said they were careful to avoid online spoilers of the race that had been decided hours earlier but aired last Wednesday at 4 p.m. They wanted to share the moment with their neighbors and friends.

In the back of the 'Old Colony' House
By David A. Mittell Jr.
Wednesday, August 08, 2012 09:00 AM
Last week, 34-year Duxbury resident and longtime Amtrak, MBTA and private-carrier locomotive engineer Richard Prone gave me a “back-of-the-house” tour of the Plymouth/Kingston commuter rail line between South Station and Halifax. The three Old Colony branches might be called the safest secret of transportation in Massachusetts.

The “safe” part entails state-of-the-art features turning the traditional “dead man’s switch” into technological wizardry. The engineer must activate a safety switch every 45 seconds or the train comes to a controlled stop. Sensors on the train monitor track conditions ahead, and automatically enforce speed-compliance. The engineer can run the train slower than the legal limit, but never faster; and sensors will detect obstacles ahead before the human eye can see them.

(The Duxbury High School Girls Varsity Rowing team from last season.)

With the growing popularity of US Olympic rower and former Duxbury resident Will Miller, the Duxbury Bay Maritime School’s (DBMS) rowing program is gearing up for a busy fall season with a competitive high school team that has gained lots of recognition.

The Duxbury High School (DHS) rowing teams’ enrollment numbers for the summer programs at DBMS have risen significantly. The director of rowing at DBMS Kristen McCarthy said the program’s beginnings were humble.

A Village visit with Sue Allen
By Nancy Joline
Wednesday, August 08, 2012 09:00 AM
Love is just around the corner, according to the old song.  For Sue Swenson, growing up in Orange, New Jersey, her true love was indeed just around the corner – a block and a half away, to be exact – but she and he were destined not to meet for many years.

Sue and her older brother and sister were descendants of a paternal great-grandfather who emigrated from Sweden, arriving in New York on a ship that sank in the harbor, as family lore has it. This ancestor wound his way to Texas, where he went into raising cattle and buying property, an enterprise so successful that the family now owns the second largest cattle ranch in America.

Sandy Sweetser has a hard time sitting still, so instead she paints. She paints all of the landmarks in Duxbury, historical buildings, homes, businesses, the beach and scenic views -- anything that piques her interest.

Razia Jan: CNN and Zabuli School Hero
By Karen Wong
Wednesday, August 08, 2012 09:00 AM

(CNN Hero Razia Jan speaks on camera in this shot that is on the CNN Heroes Web site. Behind her, students sing and dance. Photo by Karen Wong.)

In Part I of this story which appeared in the July 25 edition of the Clipper, Razia Jan had met with the Village Elders of Deh’ Subz where her Zabuli School for Girls is located and requested their blessing in adding another floor to open a high school. Though she had their approval, she still needed the financial resources to make her dream for the girls of Afghanistan come true. Then the phone rang.

A Clipper visit: Karen Grisdale
By Sarah Coughlin
Wednesday, August 08, 2012 09:00 AM
To really “see” a person’s soul is to hear them speak, feel their energy and experience the way they make you feel in their presence. While Karen Grisdale lives each day of her life as a blind person, she certainly doesn’t exist in darkness. As director of the Home Delivered Meals program at the Duxbury Senior Center, Grisdale is a passionate, energetic and genuinely caring person who adores the volunteers on whom she relies to carry out a wonderfully successful program.

We recently visited with the exceptional Karen and her Duxbury High School senior volunteer assistant, Rachel Wooley.
