Duxbury resident Colleen Shores is an avid triathlete, having competed in 20+ triathlons and more than 50 running races. An official Ironman finisher, Shores was raised in Duxbury and enjoys training, often with her triathlete mother Carol, around town. You’ve probably seen her on the road at some point. With the Duxbury Tri right around the corner, we caught up with Colleen about all things triathlon and what fitness means to her.

For years, Wendy Ziemba of Weymouth enjoyed fishing off Powder Point Bridge with her brother Wayne. Aside from the stark beauty of the spot and the bond it forged with her brother, she knew little of Duxbury, and had no idea that a good cause in Duxbury would help give meaning to Wayne’s untimely death.

Duxbury’s AAA bond rating is paying off in a big way — saving over $2.2 million over the life of the school project loan.

DHS Football and Best Buddies have joined forces for the 2012 Season.  Last year the DHS football team dedicated their season to Timothy Steele, a Duxbury Native who died in combat in Afghanistan in 2011. The DHS Football team raised more than $30,000, the entire amount earmarked for Timothy Steele’s daughter, Liberty Steele. The team embraced the Steele family and committed the season to “Strength, Honor, Liberty.”

The team held several fund-raising ventures over the course of the season and this year they have continued this commitment to community involvement.

With the same excitement as last year you will see DHS Football players “passing the bucket” around during the high school football games and selling T-Shirts bearing the DHS Football and Best Buddies logos all in an effort to get involved and raise money for the Best Buddies program.

The Canine Committee has been working on solutions to the problems of dog waste and unruly dogs on public lands, and they believe that a three-pronged approach of updated rules, enhanced enforcement and additional signage will help.

The Before and After Dark program has a number of interesting and exciting classes starting in September and early October.

A diagnosis of eastern equine encephalitis (EEE) in an unnamed Plymouth County man has led the Massachusetts Department of Public Health to declare the towns of Duxbury, Norwell and Plymouth to be at high risk for the often-fatal mosquito-borne brain disease.
