O’Neil Farm Day

The Historic O’Neil Farm has enjoyed the participation of 15 kids in an inaugural program that provides education about life on a dairy farm and paired with fun, hands-on activities with the calves. The program is held throughout the summer. Join us on Sept. 15 when the Historic O’Neil Farm will host our annual Farm Day open house event.

 
Facilities manager closer to reality

The plan to bring a facilities manager to Duxbury is moving forward, says the committee who’s working on it. Annual town meeting voters approved the creation of this new position in March and town officials plan to fund the job at the next town meeting. The salary range for this job is $60,000 to $85,000.

Two more authors scheduled for Book Breeze Literary Festival

Author of the best-selling novel, “The Rebel Wife,” Taylor Polites, will be at the Duxbury Free Library on Sept. 6 at 7 p.m. for a book talk and signing as part of this summer’s Book Breeze literary festival. Emily Sweeny, author of “Boston Organized Crime” will be at the Duxbury Free Library on Wednesday, Sept. 19, at 7 p.m.

School construction and State Primary parking update

Voting for the State Primary will be held at Duxbury Middle School on Thursday, Sept. 6 from 8 a.m. until 8 p.m.  Please note that due to the school construction project, the available parking at the Middle School has been reduced.  Voters are encouraged to avoid the campus particularly during school arrival, 7:30 – 8:30 a.m. and dismissal, 2:30 – 3:30 p.m.

 
CPC project application filing deadline

All funding requests for Community Preservation Act funding must be filed with the Duxbury Community Preservation Committee (CPC) no later than Oct. 15.  The applications received by that date will be considered for recommendation to the Annual Town Meeting in March, 2013.    Applications can address projects in the primary areas of open space, historic resource, or community housing.  Projects related to recreation will also be considered.  The scope of the project must be documented in detail.  Applications are available online at the Town of Duxbury Web site   or at the Conservation Department on the second floor of Town Hall.    Completed applications should be delivered to CPC staff in the Conservation Department, Town Hall. The CPC encourages anyone with potential proposals to contact the committee early in the process to begin preliminary discussion.  Any questions call 781-934-1100 x134.

Dragons face a challenge in 2012

Two consecutive seasons with 13-0 records, the longest winning streak in the state, and a pair of Super Bowl titles is certainly something to be proud of. But Duxbury HS football Coach Dave Maimaron sounds more like Bill Bellichick when discussing if his Dragon football team can keep it up.

Brighter, fresher schools open for students this week

New paint, new flooring and new lighting will welcome Duxbury students when they walk through the doors on the first day of school today. Superintendent Benedict Tantillo told the school committee last week that his department had been busy making repairs and upgrades to all four Duxbury schools.

We’ll also explore The Pilgrim Arrival with Jim Baker, The American Revolution and Duxbury Participation with Patrick Browne, Life in 1890’s with Margery MacMillian and How the Southeast Expressway Changed Duxbury, with Tony Kelso.
