Hingham eliminates Dragons in boys’ tennis

A funny thing happened to the DHS boys’ tennis team last Friday. They started their semifinal match with archrival Hingham on the courts at Norwell High School, and finished it a couple of hours later at the Weymouth Tennis Club.

The latest publication released by the Duxbury Rural and Historical Society, “Duxbury...Past and Present,” received an honorable mention, ranking fourth in its category, in the New England Museum Association’s 2009 Publication Awards.

Tie vote saves controversial holidays

The House on a 78-78 tie vote Wednesday night rejected a Republican-sponsored amendment that would have abolished the Suffolk County legal holidays of Evacuation Day (March 17) and Bunker Hill Day (June 17). Under House rules, a majority of votes in the affirmative is required in order for an amendment to pass. A tie goes to the negative side. If any single representative had voted to abolish the holidays instead of for retaining them, the abolition would have been successful on a 79-77 vote.

Pembroke man gets probation in rape case

A Pembroke man, on May 20, pled guilty to raping a Duxbury girl and was sentenced to five years of probation in Brockton Superior Court.

Hedlund praised a new Senate Post Audit & Oversight Committee report that validated the state Inspector General’s findings that developers have been taking advantage of lax oversight of the state’s Chapter 40B law and pocketed excess profits that rightfully belong to local communities.

Girl scouts make reusable shopping bags works of art

The Duxbury Girl Scouts sent out a good message by going green and having fun while doing it. Troop leaders Karen O’Brien and Carly Olson teamed up with Girl Scout mom and Sustainable Duxbury member Mary Lynn Carson to teach the girls the drawbacks of paper and plastic shopping bags.

Especially for the students of the American Field Service exchange program, who have to wrestle with all the trials of high school life on top of the culture differences.
