Overall, the latest results of the Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment Test – better known as MCAS – are positive for the Duxbury Public Schools. Students showed improvement in eleven of the seventeen exams given (grades 3-10 are tested in math, English language arts, science and biology.) All of the students taking the tenth grade science exam passed. And overall, the district is meeting the federal goals established by the federal No Child Left Behind act. This is also known as Adequate Yearly Progress, or AYP.

UPDATE: More shells found at middle school, police say it's not a safety issue
Friday, September 25, 2009 12:14 PM

Two empty shells were found in a bathroom at Duxbury Middle School Thursday, but Superintendent of Schools Susan Skeiber said police determined it wasn't a serious safety issue because the rounds weren't live. Last Friday, students were held past dismissal time as police searched the school in the wake of the discovery of a live round of ammunition.

Skeiber said some of the bathrooms were locked and police were contacted, but it was determined that there was no risk to the students and the building was not locked down.

“They felt it was not a safety issue at all,” she said.

Parents were notified of the latest incidents by a Connect-ED call an a letter sent home with students, Skeiber said.

UPDATE: Police manhunt ongoing
Thursday, September 24, 2009 12:38 PM

Police are still searching for a break-in suspect in the Bay Road area.

As of 4:30 p.m. police on foot were still combing the area near Priscilla Ave. and Bay Road with the help of K9 units.

Police have one suspect in custody after the break-in on Seabury Point Road was foiled earlier today, but they are still looking for an additional suspect.

Police have described the suspect as a white male with dark medium length hair, wearing a dark t-shirt and jeans that are muddy up to the knee. He may also be wearing a headband.

Duxbury as well as Kingston Police were searching the area on Bay Road and Priscilla Road using dogs. A State Police helicopter was also circling above the scene earlier in the day.

Residents in the area were notified via a reverse 911 call.

Stay tuned to the Web site and the Clipper for more information as it becomes available.

Electric (car) dreams
Tuesday, September 22, 2009 03:43 PM

He calls it “The Cheese Wedge.” Chad Conway’s bright yellow automobile is one of the most unusual cars you’ll see on the road, even in an age when smart cars and hybrids are becoming more common. The small, angular car is an electric model built in the 1980s called a Comuta-Car. It was one of 3,000 built by a Florida-based company called Commuter Vehicles Incorporated, Conway said.
