Senior captain Lauren Bittrich was the sole Duxbury runner in the top 15 positions, as the Lady Dragons dropped a 19-44 decision to the Harborwomen last Tuesday on Hingham’s 2.9-mile course. Bittrich finished second just four seconds off the winning pace.

After surrendering the state title they had held for seven straight years in 2010, the Duxbury Dragon lacrosse team regained the top spot in Massachusetts by defeating defending state champion, St. John’s Prep of Danvers, for the crown on Tuesday night at Harvard Stadium.

The DHS girls’ lacrosse team saw its season come to an end on Friday afternoon in Hopkinton, when they lost a heart-breaking, 13-12, decision to the No. 2-seeded Hillers in the Division II South Sectional final.

It’s the game that most prognosticators said would determine the Massachusetts Division I state lacrosse champion. On Saturday afternoon at 3:30, the Dragons will move one step closer to earning their eighth state crown when they travel to Billerica for the Division I state semifinals against the No. 2 seeded Indians.

They knew they had the talent. All they needed to do was rid themselves of the specter of being eliminated by Fontbonne two years in a row. The way they came out in the first period eliminated that worry, and starting the second period it looked like they were ready to get down to serious business.

After making the tournament by tying the last game of the regular season, and then knocking off the No. 4 and No. 5 seeds to advance to the South Sectional semifinals, the Dragons went deeper into post-season play then many experts expected.

With a packed gymnasium and a student body ready to explode with every Duxbury basket, it couldn’t have started any better for the Dragons, as Justin Marino gave Duxbury a 5-0 lead. After that the dream fell apart, as the No. 5-seeded Oliver Ames Tigers went on a 26-2 run over the next seven minutes to put the game away in a 69-53 win over the Dragons.

The No. 5 ranked Duxbury Dragons (12-0) took another step closer to their third Super Bowl title, and second in the last three years, with a 19-7 win over Dennis-Yarmouth on Tuesday night in Weymouth. The victory pits the Patriot League champs against Concord-Carlisle for the Division 2A title in a game that will be held at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, tentatively set for 1:30 p.m. on Saturday afternoon. |

It may not
have the local interest that taking on Marshfield would have, but playing
Atlantic Coast League tri-champs, Dennis-Yarmouth, will be the first step for
the Dragons as they go for their second Super Bowl crown in the last three
years. The semifinal
game will be played on Tuesday night in Weymouth at 5 p.m. A win over the
Dolphins will pit Duxbury against the winner of North Andover/Concord-Carlisle
on Saturday at Gillette Stadium, tentatively scheduled for 1:30 p.m. |
