If Philippe Odier’s parents had let him pursue his dreams of playing the saxophone, we may never have tasted one of his chocolate croissant masterpieces. Luckily, Odier’s father encouraged him to join the family business as a baker, and for the last 20 years Duxbury residents have been reaping the sweet rewards. |

On Sept. 2, Duxbury public school students will return to the classroom. Many of those students, however, will be waking up at an earlier or later hour –– the result of a controversial decision to swap the Alden and high school/middle school start times. |

Could a wind turbine help ease Duxbury’s rising energy costs? The idea of wind power on town-owned land is just one of several energy-saving strategies being studied by the Alternative Energy Committee. Although any such turbine is several steps removed from becoming a reality, officials say the project has support in town and would be beneficial to residents. |

Celebrate an evening of Ramadan with the Muslim Families of Duxbury and the Duxbury Interfaith Council. The community is invited to the seventh Annual Celebration Dinner. This year the Celebration will take place on Sunday, Sept. 13 from 6-8:30 p.m. at the Duxbury Senior Center. Although there is no cost, seating is limited and reservations for tickets must be made. The tickets are available through Eva at Razia’s, 35 Depot St, 781-934-6169 or at the Senior Center, Linda Hayes, 781-934-5774. Donations are appreciated and there will be a silent auction with all funds donated to the school Razia helped build, Zabuli Girls School in Afganistan. Since 1965, the Newcomers’ Club of Duxbury has been helping families get acquainted with their new hometown. Club officers, however, say that the club is much more than a welcome wagon, and provides social activities and charitable support for all residents. |

Parents of incoming freshmen and transfer students are encouraged to attend an informational meeting on Monday, Aug. 31 from 6:30-7:30 p.m. in the Duxbury High School auditorium. The short and informative meeting will be run by high school administrators and will address the most common questions on the minds of parents with children making this transition. The Gurnet Theatre Project wowed six nights of audiences these last two weeks with their outdoor production of Shakespeare’s “Macbeth.†In the best tradition of “Hey, kids! Let’s put on a show!†the GTP gathers sharp young talents, a can-do attitude, and unbounded imagination to bring free theater to the Miles Standish Park. They’re sponsored by a grant from the Duxbury Cultural Council with funds from the Massachusetts Cultural Council and private donations from Duxbury businesses and families, along with a basket-passing at the end of the show. |

The United States Postal Service may close the Snug Harbor Post Office. Residents who use the office say they'll miss the less frenetic nature of their neighborhood post office, but many agreed the branch is underused. |

Deputy Fire Chief William Carrico will be leaving to take the reigns of the Halifax Fire Department as its newest chief. Carrico was appointed by the Halifax Board of Selectmen last week. He said that he is currently working out a contract with his new employer and will probably take over the job full time between September 7-14

The renovation of the historic Tarkiln Twin Schoolhouses on Summer Street has begun. This week, selectmen voted unanimously to accept a donation worth $16,000 to restore ten antique windows dating to 1871. The donated labor and materials come from Linda Kucera, a Hingham window restoration specialist. |
